the media is RIGHT?!

..i know i know, you probably all think i am totally off my rocker with the post title i've got going on.. but hear me out!

So we all know how the media loves to portray the super skinny models and actresses as having the "ideal body". It is this obsession with being slim and a size zero that contributes to many males and females (myself included) finding themselves immersed in a world of unhealthy eating behaviors.

With this in mind you all are probably as surprised as I was to find this article in the latest issue of intouch weekly (which dawned J&K drama on the front - thus why i bought it) no your eyes are not deceiving you.. it really says that these celebrities look better with the extra weight!

some of my favorite exerpts:
..oatmeal and stir-fry?! she would fit right in in blogworld!beautiful!

i am thrilled to see that the magz are finally getting the picture that thin is NOT in! being comfortable in your own body and being healthy - well that's all the rage!

http://eclecticemily.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/see_yourself.jpg

i encourage you all to take a good long look in the mirror and pick one thing that you LOVE about yourself! I for one love my mole beauty mark ;) on my lower chin.. which i have appropriately named Mole-issa. Hey, it's an imperfection.. but it makes me unique! What do you love about yourself!? I'd love to hear! It can be a body part, or an aspect of your personality! you all possess so much beauty...be proud and share it! :)

enjoy the rest of your day, gorgeous girls!

what i wore in a flash

hey there goooooils! happy Tuesday :)

Unfortunately, I have to make this one quick because i've got the nutrish and an imperative pedi appointment with my mom because my toesies are not lookin' hawt.

I did have some what i wore pics that I forgot to post, i know.. thats so unlike me! *insert sarcasm here*

floral print tank with tie neckline from Tj's (naturally)

love the print, love the neckline, but what do I love even more?!
10 big ones?! Tj's ever steers me wrong... i'm hoping the reason it was discounted wasn't because it has a majahhh hole in it somewhere that i'm missing -- haven't found anything wrong yet!

p.s. i wanted to thank you all for your in depth and insightful feedback to yesterdays guest post!! Hopefully miss K will agree to do more guest posts in the future.. i think we all connected to her words in some way.

alright pets, i'm out of here!
have a beautiful one :)

Guest Post: Food Should Taste Good take 2!

Hello my sweet gems! Hope your Monday is going well!

I have a very insightful post to share with you on this fine afternoon! After my food should taste good post I received an email from K over at The Special K Treatment who told me she had written a similar post on her blog and agreed to allow me post it on here! I definitely encourage you all to read it if you have the time!

For the better part of the week, I’ve been obsessed with reading “healthy living” blogs and online articles for women. A friend called me out on my preoccupation with sharpness: “that’s NOT healthy. You’re binging”

And she’s right. The urges to adopt a balanced diet do not satisfy (eat proteins for snacks), the advice to ask for dressing on the side, the insistence to swap applesauce for butter…then, strategies for squeezing in time at the gym—or tales of using canned chickpeas for weights for a turbo set, and methods to increase metabolism by doing intervals….and let’s not forget that quasi self care rituals of “me time” reading yoga manicures sitting by the pool….all of these things apparitions of the “perfect healthy life.”

It’s the same stuff over and over again, repackaged with sparkles of individualism. We all want to be unique, but we all fall back to same old patterns.

Research shows that we already know what behaviors are healthy, it’s the DOING them that’s hard.

And sometimes, following health blogs IS NOT. I think our obsessions to “be healthy” CAN be a flawed means to earn a sense of worth. We compete with others (her food blog gets more hits/comments, she ran better today than me) and we compete with ourselves (I didn’t get to the gym as planned today, my calories are higher today).

But we don’t get badges for being “healthiest”

I want to be honest…I am not balanced most days. In fact, I have a propensity for clumsy alignment. I want to run when I should rest, and I want to eat or starve when I am stressed. But knowing this, makes me healthy. Sharing that struggle with you makes me healthy.

There will be a day when your kid/dog/roommate is up all night puking and the next morning in the office you have (GASP) a manufactured muffin. And you might feel less-than-a-healthy-person because of it as you read a blog where she sucked down a GM. Your sense of “not being good” is bullocks.

And yet…it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten a store muffin, although “it’s okay” “it follows health blog code” to eat a homemade one…It’s not that it doesn’t taste good, it’s just not worth the calories…oh, did I write calories…I meant guilt.

I would love to hear any feedback you girls have regarding this post! Also, if you have any questions or topic for discussion please let me kow.. K said she would love to answer any questions or write another post :)!

Enjoy whats left of your monday, loves!

dark chocolate [wet] dreams

hi there loves! here were are on the last week of June.. yikes! I, for one, can not believe it! Summer -- stop being so damn fast!

Anyways. I am happy to report that today is my last day on those awful antibiotics for my lymes disease! woo.. that means no more nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea.(mmm i've only really been nauseous, i just love those pepto bismol commercials.)

in foodie news, i am completely aware that my blog post title is super innappropriate but there is just no other way to describe how foodgasmic my sunday snackage was without making some type of sexual reference..

adult supervision advised for sure..
country choice double fudge cookie with dark chocolate dreams and a little smooshed nana

now, of course i have to sample the cookie on its own before i can give you a proper review because the DCD dominated this snack. Seriously though, i did NOT want this snack to end.. i devoured each and every bite and am 99% sure i will be eating it again today.

what made this treat EXTRA tasty was the fact that the "food plan" (read: LAME PLAN) was to have some vanilla oikos and pb puffins (which i don't hate, obv) but i was just CRAVING chocolate. I quickly reminded myself of mission: food should taste good and treated myself to what my body was begging for.. success!

(sidenote: i'm still thinking of what my big non allnatural/organic/too perfect food should taste good treat is going to be.. don't think i forgot!)

other eats of the day included (but were not limited to..)a chocolate milkshake chocolate boost, frozen nana, scoop of PB2.. m'mm funky monkey, anyone?!

**I loved the taste of this shake but i was hoping for the consistency to be a little thicker.. do any of you have tips on how i can make this thicken this baby up?!**

after spending the day traveling the town delivering "za" ;) (aka pizza in daily balance world!) i knew i had to whip up somethig similar for lunch
joseph's pita, salsa, turkey, melted swiss cheese
with carrots and kashi honey sesame crackers sitting pretty on the side
*I also had a snapple strawberry antioxidant water, loved it!*

Operation Beautiful..
so you all remember my precious water bottle that i accidentally dropped someone stole from me and threw to the ground in rage that i talked about in this video post?? Well, i used this little guy and his pain chipage as inspiratin for yesterdays OB note."you don't have to be perfect to be beautiful"

so what if it's chipped? the water still tastes the same.. so what if your hips are too wide? you still have an amazing heart :) remember that!

pb&jams
this weeks PB&Jams is honoring the king of pop.. may he RIP
Download: Michael Jackson - Thriller

alright well I am off to have some breakie, do some yoga, then go see UP with my dad. I actually never ended up seeing it with Ginge and his younger brother so i'm really excited to see it today - but i'm even more excited to see my dad in those 3D glasses.

have a good one princesses!

poppin' my collar.. i mean, shoulder.

how goes it guys and gals?! i'm happy to report that the sun did make its way out today so this post won't be as whiney as my others. I know what you're thinking... http://www.worshipnc.org/Portals/13/Alleluia.JPG
I don't blame you

my day thus far was spent grocery shopping and delivering pizza pies with my red headed wonder.. what a glamorous life i lead.

obvs the purpose of this post is not to talk about how lame cool my life is.. i was asked another question by my pretty little yogini, Nicole, that i wanted to answer asap! Nicole asked..
"I was trying to do one more yoga podcast but when ever i went into downward dog and then came out my shoulder kept POPPING! it didn't hurt but it did feel uncomfy. Has this happened to you?"

this actually happens to me a LOT and i've also noticed a lot of popping in my hips but never thought anything of it because it doesn't hurt. This question definitely got me curious to research whether this was normal or dangerous. Here's some info I found at yogajournal.com:

**Note the pink bolded section for your specific question, Nicole!**

Rubbing Bones
Most of the joint sounds we hear are due to bones rubbing. This is "friction popping." When we snap our fingers, we press our thumb and middle finger together hard enough to create friction. Then we try to overpower this friction with other muscles of the hand. This opposition of forces slightly bends the bones of the finger and thumb. When the two fingers finally slip past one another, the bones rebound violently and vibrate briefly, like tuning forks. This creates the snapping sound.

The snapping of our fingers is not at all painful or harmful, but sometimes we inadvertently create these popping sounds in other joints, such as our elbows. When our elbow briefly "catches" and then pops, it can be quite surprising and even slightly painful if the vibrating bones press a nerve. The popping sound has the same cause as finger snapping: the two bones of the elbow are temporarily in friction, and when they release, they vibrate violently and we hear a "pop."

A similar but more alarming instance of friction popping takes place in the knee. More specifically, it occurs in our patella, or kneecap. The patella sometimes rides up on the side of the groove it glides in and temporarily sticks there. It is being held on the lip of the groove by the pull of the thigh muscles. This is much like snapping our thumb and finger, but this moment is very brief because as the knee bends and moves, the patella loses its precarious balance of forces and "pops" violently back down into the groove where it belongs. There is nothing really harmful in this; the patella is not injuring the ligaments or cartilage. But it can be alarming for our knee to lock up for an instant and then release. At worst, there is a slight twinge to the tendon around the patella because it was stretched briefly.

The most common place to hear friction popping is in our neck. Most of us can roll our heads and hear these sounds, although they are not as loud here because the forces of friction are not as great. The bones involved are the facets of the cervical vertebrae-typically several of them, which is why the noise sounds "crunchy," like walking on pebbles.

Is It Bad for You?
If our elbow or knee inadvertently pops, there is nothing to worry about. There is just enough slack in our joints that these twinges are inevitable, and no harm is done. But there is little value in consciously trying to make these sounds happen. Just as it takes a certain effort to snap our fingers, many people can pop their hips over and over by doing sit-ups or leg lifts.

Other people can do similar things with their knees. This is not desirable. Even our thumb gets sore if we snap it enough. If a student insists on popping a joint repetitively, the joint may become inflamed and painful. This is because the body is trying to minimize the friction by swelling the fluid sacks that line our joints. These sacks are called bursae, and their inflamed condition is called bursitis. Bursitis most frequently occurs in the small joints of the shoulder and elbow. Bursitis is less likely to occur in the patella, but eventually the cartilage can become worn and irritated. This condition is called chondromalacia, and it makes the knee painful to bend.

What to do?

If a student can pop a hip each time they do leg raises, they should try one of the following variations to avoid creating friction in the socket.
1. Do leg raises with knees bent.
2. Experiment by holding the legs slightly apart.
3. Don't allow the legs to come too close to the floor when bringing the feet down.

Friction in the patella can sometimes be avoided by turning the foot out slightly in Warrior poses and triangles. But due to a unique bone structure in every individual, it sometimes may be more helpful to turn the foot in, rather than out. Frequently, the strain on the patella also can be relieved by stepping backwards into Warrior, rather than forward. Stepping backward relaxes the strain on the bent front patella, allowing it to slide as it should with minimal friction.

**Friction pops sometimes occur in the elbow or shoulder when practicing Chaturanga or Upward Dog. Asking a student to take their hands wider and their elbows out can help. This variation requires more strength to perform, so beginners may need to hold themselves on the knees, rather than feet**

Joint Fixation

The second cause of joint popping is fixation. The bones of a fixated joint are temporarily stuck together due to suction, not friction. When this vacuum is broken, we hear a popping sound.

An everyday example of fixation is when the bottom of a glass of water sticks to the surface it is resting on. When two hard, smooth surfaces have a film of fluid between them, they can create a vacuum by forcing the fluid out to the edges. As long as the seal of fluid remains unbroken, the vacuum remains. If we are careful, we can lift quite a heavy plate by fixating a glass to it.

Most of the joints of the body are ideally shaped for fixation to occur. The ends of the bones are lined with hard, smooth cartilage and the joint itself is filled with synovial fluid. This fluid is necessary to lubricate the joints and minimize friction, but if a joint is immobile long enough, then some of the fluid between the bones squeezes out and a temporary vacuum, or fixation, occurs.

The most common places for fixation to occur are the fingers, toes, and joints of the spine and ribs. When fixation occurs, we typically feel "stuck" or "tight." This is because are joints are not moving. People who crack their knuckles are breaking the fixation that occurs in their fingers. People who "crack" their spines in a spinal twist are doing the same thing. It feels good to them, and there is no harm in it.

Know the Difference

There is an important difference between releasing fixation and friction popping. Once a fixation has been released, the joint will not pop again until it has rested, immobile, for some time. This is because it takes time for fixation to reoccur even when conditions are right. A glass of water, for example, will not instantly fixate to a plate. Releasing joint fixations is actually beneficial, because it allows the free functioning of the joints.

Friction popping is not like fixation. It can be created at will. We can snap our finger and thumb as often as we like. If you or your students are able to repetitively pop a hip, knee, or neck, then it is undesirable friction popping. The occasional friction pop will do no harm, but be mindful that it does not become habit or a nervous twitch.

very interesting! but it's reassuring to hear that it's not dangerous! just gotta oil my joints like the tin man i suppose :)

man, i feel like a woman..

What's good mamiis?! hope you had a fab-o weekend filled with sunshine and spice ;) unfortunately, I can't say the same for myself - though yesterday was certainly an improvement. I swear, i hopped in to my car and all I see is a patch of dark clouds consuming the sky. I'm pretty sure i'm cursed weather-wise. Once i got to the course it was blue skies all around around and hot as balls (TWSH, you know) anyhoo, i thought things were looking up when all of the sudden it just starts downpouring, seriously.. out of nowhere. I run inside.. it stops.. i come outside, it's hot, i start driving, its cloudy and cold and obvs i left my rain jacket at the club house (naturally). The day went on like that and i'm pretty much convinced the motha natch needs therapy for her bipolar disorder.. she may have to attend some sessions with me.

i did encounter a male who brightened my day a tad, despite his creepiness. The girl who worked the shift before me is a teeny tiny little thing and just very petite. After she ended her shift I went out this one guy said "Oh finally they send a real woman out" .. hmm, strange.. so i awkwardly giggled and asked "what do you mean" to which he responded "Ay the last beer cart girl they sent us out here had a body of a 10 year old, but you look like a real woman!" .. er, thanks. Creepy, no doubt, but much appreciated.. i can dig looking like a woman :).

on the foodie front..
i have been all for the savory snacks recently.. 1/2 a WW potato roll with french onion LC & salsa and some edamame.

so for dessert i had a tough time choosing between this:vanilla oikos, smooshed nana, raisins, and PB2 "syrup"

or this..caramel crumb holey donut

that's a tougher that choosing between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck..http://glamorati.com/celebrity/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/matt-damon-thumb.jpg

Jenny Tsunami

hey hey hey beauty queens! Hope your Saturday was sunnier and less creep than mine :)

so, please tell me you all watched thet Disney Channel original movie Johnny Tsunami as a child/teenager/youthful adult?!
http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/jpg/main_-1_7342_200.jpg
It was definitely one of my favorites.. right up there with Rip Girls and Zenon girl of the 21st century.

Anyhoo, as my post title suggests i had a less than ideal day weather wise on the golf course.. who knew you could have beautiful clear sunny skies, pouring rain, thunder, lightening, and hail (yes, hail) all within 10 mins. Dayum motha natch, bipolar much?

i was channeling my inner Emily Dickinson this morning so i decided to put together a little poem recap of my day to the sweet rhyme sceme of "twas the night before christmas"

twas a friday afternoon
and all through the course
the creepers were creeping
commenting on the length of my shorts

the alchohol was stocked on the golf cart with care
in hopes that some rich guy soon would be there

I served beers and cola and made lotsa bread
while visions of PB&Co danced in my head

i in my sperrys
the men with their tees
forgetting about their wives
and flirting with 19 year old me

when out from a sky there arose such a boom
i looked to the clouds and knew i was doomed

i sprang to my cell and dialed the club house in a flash
hoping my boss would give me some advice that was rash[ional ;)!]

she answered the phone and i told her my rain fears
to which she replied "no, it looks like it will clear"

when what to my wandering eyes did i see
but a lightening bolt hotter than Ms. Halle Berry

the rain started to fall like someone taking a pi$$
to which i quickly decided "oh hell no, screw this"

faster than Eddie Cullen I headed back without delay
to unstock the cart and put the goods away

on Budweiser, Coors Light, Coke, Rum and Gin
i tossed them away before i got shocked like Ben Franklin

my shorts, they were soaking
big mistake to wear white
and i cringed when mc creepster asked
"hey babe wanna go out tonight?"

i sprang to my car without further delay
friday sucked for real, here's to a great saturday!

alright alright i may have skipped a couple stanzas but i was running out of material, it's early..you understand.
hope saturday is kind to you, beauties :)

i'm still Jenny from the block...

hola chicas! (alright, i still may be in fiesta mode from last night, more on that later.. )

so first of all I gotta say, when I begged all of my lovely residents to send some of your hot weather this way I only meant a couple degrees! Dang it was hotter than Rob Pat here yesterday.. and don't get me started on my night last night! It was a scorcher and I could barely sleep.. needless to say when I woke up this morning my bed was soaked.. though I'm still not sure if that was from a.) my sweat b.) my tears that i cried because i was so hot or c.) my urine from all the water i drank yesterday to stay hydrated. I'm going to go ahead and eliminate option C for the sake of retaining my dignity.
After such a restless night i definitely needed caffeinated crack
ah, so perfect! Mr. Coffee did me well.

when I say my old coffee machine was a piece i mean it! for the past month i've been sipping on cold java complete with coffee granules.. ack!

after some breakie I decided to work on my fitness and did this 20 minute pilates video... though i'm no GC obvz ;) i do like this workout video as a quick, moderately fast paced, core workout! It also touches on legs a little bit which is always helpful in my mission: JLo bootay..

Create your own FACEinHOLE
you know I couldn't go the day without getting my yoga on so i decided to try out this 8 minute yoga for abs. This class was just a few standard ab moves but i'm pretty sure the instructors clock was whack! I swear, when she said to do bicycle crunches for a minute but it was at least 2 minutes ;) I also felt like a major freak-a-leak doing crunches in supta baddha konasana pose..
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/4149/suptabk2qg2.jpg
i looked like a pregnant woman giving birth while trying to eat food off her chest... you know, the usual.

all in all though it was a great, quick, ab workout.. just the way i like it!

so the fiesta last night was a BLAST.. we sipped on strawberry daquiris, nibbled on food should taste good multigrain chips & in true PB&family fashion, we danced to the macarena (I wish I were joking). It was so amazing spending time with my family.. we all just couldn't stop laughing and dancing.. though this may be attributed to the rum mommabear snuck in to our drinks ;) all in all though it was a night to remember for sure and the perfect way to ring in summer time!

On the agenda today I was scheduled to work at 1:30-7 but my boss called to ask if I could come in around 11:00.. an 8 hour work day has not been in my vocabulary for a very long time but i suppose its time i stop being so useless and make some moolah! the PB isn't going to pay for itself, right? and i am in dire need of some cinnamon raisin swirl and dark chocolate dreams! if thats not motivation to work hard I don't know what is.

Before I go I really want to say how much I appreciate all of your comments in my last post regarding my eating tendencies.. and i'm very proud of all the fellow blogettes who decided to join me in challenging themselves to eat something that just TASTES GOOD. I'd love to hear what your girls decide to eat :) I'll definitely be sharing my treat of choice!

Thank you also for providing some hair tips for my sweet Caroline (duh duh duh good times never felt... urgh okay, i had to)
  • Emma said: I've been very happy with good ol' Aussie (the stuff in the bright purple bottle!)
  • Devan Geselle said: I love the organix cocnut shampoo and conditioners! Also Jasons brand Sea Kelp shampp and conditioner. Kheils (though more expensive) has amazing hair products that i highly reccomend!
  • peaceandpeanutbutter said: Shampoo....One of my favorites is Dove brand...my hair is always healthy and cooperative when I use it ;-)
thanks again, loves!

Have a beautiful friday!

"food should taste good".. no, really..it should.

hi there loves, how is your day going?! It's a hot one here [finally] in good ol' CT.. loves it!

FYI my post title is referring to all foods.. not just those yummy chips - though they do taste dayum good!

So, I've mentioned this in the past but there are times when I have a difficult time justifying eating the foods on my meal plan when i'm not hungry..okay, let me rephrase that.. eating when i'm not STARVING. Today I just happened to have a conversation with my brother today that really struck a chord with me.. i was sitting outside with him and my mom eating lunch and my mom asked if anyone wanted the rest of her potato chips. My brother jumped on that like Tom Cruise on Operas couch. After watching him polish off 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and his own bag of chips, i was shocked that he could still be hungry. I said to him "jeeze Dan how are you still hungry after all of that?" he looked at me and simply said "well i'm not really" so i asked.. "then why are you eating my mom's chips" and he responded by saying...
"because they taste good"

hmm, what is this foreign concept you speak of dear brother? eating not because your starving but just because you enjoy the taste of food?! interesting... very interesting.

this reminded me of a question I received from a reader a dew days ago.. She asked:
"I was just curious as to how you overcome things that have virtually no nutritional value?"

at first I was a little stumped by this question.. why? because in the past few months I haven't allowed myself to eat anything that has no nutritional value. A part of me feels as though I've become so consumed in eating only all natural and organic foods that I've forgotten what its look to dig in to a snack just because it tastes GOOD! I really noticed how obsessive I've become with food the other day when I was at Ginge's house and told him I was starving. He offered me one of those quaker chewy granola bars and I declined SOLEY based on the fact that it wasn't "all natural" .. ridiculous, right? Sure, whole grains and all natural foods are great for us and I do enjoy eating them - but a good old fashion sandwich with dare I say, WHITE BREAD, or a Trix yogurt (i don't know about you but I loved these as a kid and was totally eyeing them at Sean's the other day) will NOT hurt is! Correct me if i'm wrong but I've never heard of anyone dying from a few oreos or a cupcake :) Point being, though eating healthy all natural foods has become a huge part of my life -- I think it's gotten to a point where I refuse anything else and that is NOT okay.. my food is not always going to be perfect, it's not always going to nourish my body in some way, sometimes my food is just going to TASTE GOOD and that's how it should be!

Concidentally enough, during my regular snack time today I was just not hungry at all.. i decided to put a little operation beautiful action in to play to make me feel more comfortable eating my slice of cinnamon raisin ezekial toast with cinnamon raisin swirl and banana
"your belly may not want me but your tastebuds will love me!"
..and they did!

though obviously this was a healthy snack.. it felt good to eat something just for the sake of ENJOYING IT'S TASTE.. not because I was starving and needed something to silence my growling tummy. I am however definitely planning on challenging myself to eat something that perhaps does haven't any nutritional value but is just yummy.. I'll be sure to let you know when I figure out what that's going to be :)

in other totally unrelated news I got a new coffee maker today and I am SO EXCITED! my old one was an absolute pieceeee. Can't wait to see what this bad boy can do in the morning!!

Also, another wonderful reader, Caroline, asked

I have a question for you (and any of you beautiful blogging babes who have any insight) for your next makeup/beauty post perhapsss: i'm in the market for a new shampoo/conditioner. My hair is a lot like yours, long and stick straight with a deep side part. is there anything you use that you lovelovelove? there are so many brands out there, so overwhelming. Thanks girllll! Have a fabulous dayyyy :)

Hey Caroline! thanks so much for the question -- i definitely have met some really good and really bad shampoos and conditioners in my day. For the past few months I've been using the Organix Coconut Milk shampoo/condition and i ADORE IT! I did a video post review on it here if you want to check it out :)

if any of you girlies have some tips for Caroline feel free to leave me a comment and i'll be sure to include them in my next post!

alright well I am off to get my fiesta on with the fam!
adios senoritas :)

PB&family fiesta!

hi pretties! happy Thursday :)
first i wanted to thank you all for your wonderful PB incite.. it is a bloggie favorite for sure and i'm so glad to share the passion for the nut buttery goodness and enjoy all of it's health benefits with you!

Yesterday morning I woke up to the sounds of this baby rollin' in to the driveway...my sister's moving truck..
at first I was angry about being woken up (who moves their shizznit at 7:00 in the morning?!) but then i saw the driver of the truck and he was kind of sexy so I decided to be an angel and go out and help ;). I'm also glad I did because i spotted some of my clothes in my sisters luggage that she was discretely trying to smuggle to Florida... nice try, sis!

after packing up the truck and eating some breakie, it was yoga time for sure. I did a 30 minute lunchtime flow which I think may be one of my favorite classes on the site. It's the perfect blend of rejuvenating stretches and strenuous poses and made me feel wonderful!

after my practice i was a hungry yogini ;) so I whipped up a quick and delish snack-attack..
slice of cinnamon raisin Ezekial bread with a french onion laughing cow wedge and a diced fuji

i was a little worried that the french onion LC and cinnamon raisin bread would be a worse pairing than Tom Cruise and Cher...
http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/05_01/tomcherALPHA2804_468x701.jpg
i wish i were lying.. it happened, look it up.

Fortunately, the combo of sweet and savory were perfect together.. more similar to Reese and Jake..
http://images.cdn.thefashionspot.com/article_imgs/reese_witherspoon.jpg
love them <3>

while i was mid-snack the Ginge came over. I told him I was feeling a little sore from my practice that morning and he seemed shocked and said "really? yoga makes you sore? i thought it was just stretching and meditating" oh sweet red-headed wonder.. how wrong you are! I tried to explain to him the strain on your legs during a long warrior two pose or chair pose. He didn't seem to believe me, so of course i jokingly challenged him to do a practice with me. Surprise, surprise, homeboy agreed.. as long as I promised to do a leg workout session on HIS turf as well meaning squats, leg presses, etc. I am VERY excited .. i'm trying to think of the perfect class for him to do becasue i would love if he enjoyed it and wanted to practice more .. it would be such a wonderful thing for us to do together! Let me know if you have any suggestions :).

while he was here we may or may not have watched bring it on 3 which i'm pretty sure he'll kill me for admitting :). After he left to fulfill his pizza delivery boy duties I chowed down again on another delish snack..
Earth's best apple sunny days snack bar with some rice pudding and more diced fuji
these pups taste very similar to the Kashi Baked Apple Spice bars. They are super small and at only 70 cals they are certainly no power bar.. but they do have 20% DV of calcium which Jenny likey a lot and they are the perfect addition to yogurt/oats/whatever your heart desiresi also had some Mi-Del whole wheat honey grahams with some peanut butter, naturally loved it!

later on last night i went over to my girlfriends house to watch the season premiere of the Real World. Did any of you girls watch it?! CJ (i think that's his name?!) is a hottie for real and that whole mom hook up thing was crazy/sickening!

So tonight my family has decided to have a little taco fiesta to celebrate the arrival of summer and my sisters departure to Florida. We're not having any guests over us, just the 6 of us sipping on pina coladas and listening to the CD that we bought in Mexico which I was pretty sure we'd never use. I also spotted some sombreros camping out in the basement so Ive got my fingers crossed that they'll make an appearance tonight. Yes, we're basically the Brady Bunch.

My mom also handed over the culinary responsibilities to me and is allowing me to make ground turkey meat rather than ground beef (which is a bit of a fear food/i just don't dig it too much) so i'm glad i'll be able to partake in the grub with my fam.

in Operation Beautiful News I wrote out this lovely message to myself yesterday...
"your beauty comes from your smile...not your hips"

I'm off to hit up the grocery store to get the ingredients for tonights fiesta with my mommabear,
have a great day girls!

nuts for peanuts :)

Good afternoon lovelies! Hope your wednesday is going well!

Earlier today I received a question from a lovely reader who asked...

"I noticed you eat peanut butter a lot. It's a big fear food of mine and I was just wondering if it was ever a fear food of yours? How did you finally reincorporate it back in to your life?"

Thanks so much for your question, girl! As you may have guessed from my PB porn, my outrageous number of empty PB jars hanging in the garbage, oh - and my blog title, i KIND of like peanut butter ;) (understatement of the year for sure!) Ever since I was a little girl peanut butter was always one of my favorite foods...throughout all of elementary school I think there may have only been a handful of times when I did not bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch and I probably would have continued this trend throughout middle school and high school as well but we all know how “uncool” it was to bring lunch at that age ;) I kid i kid.. but seriously, I LOVED me some peanut butter!

However, there was a time during my weight-loss journey when I went on a huge "non-fat" kick. I refused to eat ANYTHING containing fat (which means PB slowly left my life) and I became a prisoner to nonfat cheese, pretzels, ice pops, sugar free jello, and those dannon light and fit yogurts... unfortunately, after following this diet for a few weeks I definitely became light, but not so fit! I quickly learned that not most often no fat = no taste and no nutrients, i also realized it also equals NO STRENGTH!! I barely had enough energy to walk up the STAIRS let alone engage in the cardio and workouts that i was doing (but lets not get started on that..) point being our bodies NEED fat.. it's essnetial to our health! and what better way to get in your daily dosage than some creamy sweet nutty perfection?

I found some articles that talk about the health benefits of and peanut butter so feel free to read if you're interested :)

"Peanut butter, like most foods, contains some fat. Fortunately, 80% of the fat in peanut butter is unsaturated fat -- "the good fat" -- which may actually help lower LDL-cholesterol levels in your blood. In fact, because peanut butter is so versatile, good tasting and nutritious, it is included in many medically endorsed weight loss and diabetic diets. Fat, the
concentrated source of energy in your diet, is a vital nutrient. It provides essential fatty acids, helps maintain skin, and carries many fat soluble vitamins such as A, D and E.

Your Heart Will Go Nuts for Peanuts

Peanuts are a very good source of monounsaturated fats, the type of fat that is emphasized in the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Studies of diets with a special emphasis on peanuts have shown that this little legume is a big ally for a healthy heart. In one such randomized, double-blind, cross-over study involving 22 subjects, a high monounsaturated diet that emphasized peanuts and peanut butter decreased cardiovascular disease risk by an estimated 21% compared to the average American diet.

In addition to their monounsaturated fat content, peanuts feature an array of other nutrients that, in numerous studies, have been shown to promote heart health. Peanuts are good sources of vitamin E, niacin, folate, protein and manganese. In addition, peanuts provide resveratrol, the phenolic antioxidant also found in red grapes and red wine that is thought to be responsible for the French paradox: the fact that in France, people consume a diet that is not low in fat, but have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to the U.S. With all of the important nutrients provided by nuts like peanuts, it is no wonder that numerous research studies, including the Nurses' Health Study that involved over 86,000 women, have found that frequent nut consumption is related to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

So yes, obviously peanut butter does have fat but it's important to remember that our bodies NEED fat and that certain types are GOOD FOR US. I realy hope these articles helped you, girl, and gave you the incentive to go out and buy a jar (PB&Co preferably ;)!!) and dig in to that yummy and HEALTHY snack!

edited to add: to provide some extra PB encouragement here are some wise words from my fellow peanut butter addict:

Great info Jenny. PB is such a healthy (and D-elicious way!) to incorporate fat into our bodies. In fact, I'm not ashamed to say that I often go through a jar/a week! Yum!

To your reader: It often helps to look at PB for it's overall nutritional value (and taste!!) rather than as a 'high-fat' item. Just remind yourself that your are nourishing your body with great fuel!!

I second PB&Co....(preferable Cinnamon Raisin??!!)

Love you girl!

PS....Today I had: 2 TBS with bfast, 1 TBS with lunch, and 1 tbs at snack :-) LOVE ME SOME PB!

love you tons and tons beautiful girl :)

tuesday was fabulous - the perfect blend of relaxation, fun, deliciousness and sexiness (more on that later..)

relaxation...
I did the 30 minute core yoga routine yesterday and it felt AWESOME. It's incredible how much of a difference it makes when you are conscious of the muscle you are working out and try to focus on using it to carry you through your practice I tried to become aware of my core throughout each pose and transition and it made such a huge difference! I'm definitely feelin' it today. They also have a free 20 minute core workout class if you're interested :)!

also on the yoga front I recieved this question from a lovely blogette yesterday...

It's a wrap asked: My friend is taking me to her yoga class tonight. I'm a little nervous ...it's the one where they crank up the heat and supposedly you come pouring out sweat. Have you tried it before?

My answer:
Unfortunately, I have never taken a Bikram yoga (also referred to as hot yoga) class though it's always something I've been extremely curious about! I have done this hot power fusion class but it was done in my nice cool air conditioned house rather than a hot room because i'm pretty sure PB&Daddy would've slaughtered me if i ran up the heating bill in the dead of summer. Though I have never taken a class this question did spark some interest in me so I put my student hat on and decided to do a little research (good ol' wikipedia saves the day as always)

Bikram or hot or fire yoga is a series of yoga poses done in a heated room, which is usually maintained at a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 40 degrees Celsius). A vigorous yoga session at this temperature promotes profuse sweating, which is to rid the body of toxins. It also makes the body very warm, and therefore more flexible.

Bikram yoga is a system of wellness, restoration and rejuvenation. The heated studio facilitates deeper stretching, prevents injury, relieves stress and tension and detoxifies the body. Bikram yoga was designed to systematically stimulate and restore health to every muscle, joint and organ of the body. Participants are guided through a series of 26 postures. The heart, lungs, blood circulation, muscles, brain activity and mental capacity are all affected by participating in the art of yoga. There are two descriptions of the 26 exercises and they are asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), both of which rely on each other to deliver positive results. According to Bikram, many people only use up to 50 percent of their lung capacity, and just like any muscle, the lungs must be stretched and with time will be able to withstand holding more oxygen. When one is practicing the pranayama he or she will eventually be able to enhance oxygen conversion and absorption, as well as improve blood circulation. (Choudhury, 2007)

It is common for beginners to experience dizziness and nausea. Beginners may feel faint or pass out. It is encouraged to take breaks as needed if a participant is feeling lightheaded. (Advisement brochure at Bikram Yoga, Glen Allen, Virginia)

Blood circulation is affected immensely during Bikram Yoga, because of two processes called Extension and Compression. These two dynamics work together to deliver fresh oxygen to every joint, muscle, and organ within the human body. While performing a specific asana, the body is stretching or compressing a certain part of the body; thus, cutting off circulation temporarily. This restriction of circulation causes the heart to pump more blood in the reaction of the shortage. The pumping of excess, fresh blood is called extension. Once the asana is complete, and the individual comes out of the posture, then the new oxygenated blood is able to rejuvenate the arteries that were being compressed. It is said that because of the volume change and influx of fresh blood, any infection, bacteria, or toxin can be released.(Choudhury, 2007)

Benefits of Bikram Yoga
  • Heat is used in Bikram and Hot Yoga in order to allow you to go deeper and safer into a Yoga Pose.
  • Your body becomes more flexible in the heat and since most poses used in Bikram are physically challenging, heat allows you to get into a pose that you never imagined you can do.
  • It also eliminates the risk of injuries, promotes sweating, and helps you release the toxins in your body.
  • The Bikram Yoga Poses not only work on your muscles but also on your internal organs.
  • Each pose stretches and strengthens your muscles, joints, and ligaments and, at the same time release the toxins and work on your internal organs like the glands and the nervous system.
Bikram Yoga Tips and Cautions
  • It is necessary that you have your personal Yoga mat and towel for Hot Yoga as you will be sweating profusely. Practitioners normally wear very little clothing for this reason.
  • See that you have lots of water prior to and after class. This is to avoid getting dehydrated. Likewise you are not advised not to eat anything for 2 hours before class.
  • If you wish to take up Hot Yoga, make sure see that the center you select is been certified to teach Hot Yoga.
  • Bikram Yoga is not recommended for pregnant women, as it can increase the primary body temperature.

hope this helped, love, and I would love to hear all about how your class went!!

deliciousness
today i had a bomb-a$$ snackie in honor of my tvtrash-loving-soulmate...vanilla oikos mixed with PB2, smooshed nana, and PBpuffins.. so bossy ;)i also had a lemon-poppyseed heart thrive with naturally more PB
i was a little hesitant about trying this flavor because i'm not a huge citrus flavor girl but i knew after the overwhelming recommendations to try this one i had to jump on board. Though it wasn't my FAVORITE I did enjoy it ... i just don't think the healthy baking company can do wrong!

I also polished off the night with a holey donut, naturally..chocolate crumb.. nom nom nom
after trying all of the "crumb" varieties I've finally compiled a list of favorites:
  1. vanilla crumb
  2. chocolate crumb
  3. caramel crumb
though I would happily devour any one of them!

sexiness
after dying and going to heaven/eating my holey donut Ginge came up with the brilliant idea to go see The Proposal. I figured it would be a waste of my time to even bother asking him to see it because he is so anti-chickflicks.. so when he suggested it i was shocked.. but then i realized he may or may not have a crush on Sandra Bullock and that is a-okay with me because I may or may not have a crush on Ryan Reynolds...
http://www.insidesocal.com/outinhollywood/.ryanreynolds.jpg
you understand...

the movie itself was great.. Sandra Bullock is a phenomenal actress - i've always been in love with her since Miss Congeniality. The movie was also fab-o because though it had the romantic mush it wasn't overly cheesy and it was hilar. so for all you ladies with your macho macho men out there like mine, they'll enjoy it too! plus Sandra gets nakie so if alll else fails you can just tell your boys that..

alright well I am off to get my zen on then play the day by ear from there
enjoy your hump day, pretties :)
