Aunt JENN-ima

For some reason I have been craving maple syrup like crazy recently, which is slightly strange because I've never been a huge fan of the stuff. I know what you're thinking. Jenny, strange cravings? No worries, I'm not preggo - though sometimes I wish I were. My biological clock has been ticking since I was like 4.

Anyhoo.

My maple spree started yesterday morning with the Erewhon Maple Spice Organic Instant Oatmeal I received the other day from the US Mills company.

What I'm really digging about these oatmeal packets is that they only have 4 grams of sugar, which is nothing compared to other brands.

It wasn't overly sweet which is safe to assume because of the low sugar content, but the maple flavor was definitely there. My sole complaint was that the box didn't offer any microwave directions (they recommend you use boiling water). Of course, in true irrational Jenny fashion I opted not to just follow the directions and attempted to create my own microwave method which resulted in wasting 2 packets. Woe is me! But alas, after some trial and error I was able to figure it out, though I have a feeling it would have been much better had I just used the boiling water technique. Perhaps there's a reason there are no microwavable directions? D'oh! never thought of that.

Maple encounter number 2:

KERF's "pumpkin pie cake" [which is sheer and utter brilliance, by the way] Topped with Better N' PB and some maple grove farms pure maple syrup.

p.s. according to my mom, this syrup cost her 11 dollars. Ridic! It best be infused with some gold specks or something.

Encounter number 3: This morning's breakfast aka "The Show Stopper"

2 van's waffles, crazy richards smooth PB, smooshed banana, cinnamon, maple syrup, an apple

le pour

extra maple reserved for dipping purposes, obvi.

I don't know why I enjoyed this breakfast so much. Oh wait, yes I do... because maple and peanut butter and bananas and waffles are god's gift to the world. I didn't want this breakfast to end. Ah well, that's what tomorrow's for.

Have you ever had any strange cravings? Any foods you weren't crazy about as a child but love now? (I used to hate carrots.. insanity!)

and perhaps my most important question...
Why the heck is maple syrup so dang expensive?

Oh! and before I forgot -- in honor of Make it Happen Monday I've decided to extend last weeks goal of "just being" in to this week because I like it and it's been making me happy. What are your goals?!

Alright, mucho things to do before GG tonight and lord knows I can't be distracted while drooling over Mr. Bass.

Hope you all had a great start to you week!

I agree about breakfast #3...and what a tasty gift it is! :D

I used to hate broccoli as a kid and lettuce...couldn't stand salad! Now, I don't know what I would do without salad...I eat one almost everyday!
I love the looks of all those breakfasts! And, Quaker Oats Weight Control instant oatmeal only has 1 gram of sugar. You should check them out. I eat it every morning! They have a maple & brown sugar flavor, banana bread flavor, and cinnamon flavor. My fave is maple & brown sugar :)
I'm excited for GG tonight, too!!!

I think we all get certain cravings once in while! I have to admit that I'm not much of a maple syrup girl. Ever since I tried agave nectar I've used it instead of maple syrup. SO much better (in my opinion!). Glad you figured out the oats though... yes, I am definitely one to not follow directions as well. See where that gets us??? ;)

I've had days when all I've had is maple. Good days. You should try maple mustard tofu!
Oh, and I know, it's mad expensive for the good stuff. I'm actually putting that on my christmas list for my grandparents from New Hampshire because they probs have a neighbor who makes his own, haha

I wasn't a fan of veggies when I was a kid. Now I loooooooove them. I think that's pretty normal though, unfortunately.

That waffle breakfast looks amazing!

I love maple syrup and almond butter together in oatmeal! Yum. Crazy cravings ... have 'em all the time. Especially for green veggies. There are times I can eat a head of broc myself! I guess it could be worse?!

You know I have never been a die hard maple syrup lover. I was always a cinnamon/sugar topped pancake/french toast kinda girl :) Although everything does look beautiful dawling.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this since I'm from Vermont, but I actually kind of prefer the fake syrup to the real stuff. I know that it's completely gross but I just like the viscosity of it better. My mom even boils her own sap in our kitchen but I'm not a huge fan.

I think I remember hearing that it takes something like 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of syrup. All of the labor and the energy that it takes to bring it into a syrup are part of what make it so crazy expensive.

Kailey (SnackFace) said...

Oh holy deliciousness...I can haz all three breakfasts? K great. I also craved maple yesterday! So I had some fake garbage in the fridge and used it, but it worked! No idea why it's so expensive. Maple trees are dying?

As a wee one, I can't remember if there was anything I detested. I've always loved fruits and veggies (and bread, duh). I never liked meat, but I still don't do that now. Oh! I used to hate coconut! LOVE it now, though!

And weird cravings...get them all the time. Needed pasta sauce today. Fixed that!

Love you, pudding!!! xoxoxo

Lizzy said...

hate carrots?? ah me too! i ask myself why everyday, seeing as i LOOOOOVE them now!

I've never been a fan of maple syrup, but boy does breakie look amazing! :)

Maple syrup is deelish! You need to make the carrot/pear/raisin bread next -- even though I used SF stuff it still counts :/ -- and yes, PB slathered on that slice of love sounds divine!!!

Your eats all look awesomely deelish...

I used to hate most veggies when I was younger (wayyyy younger) and now I don't discriminate, bring it veggies! :)

jenn-ima! guuuuuurl all that maple goodness has got me cravin' sap. especially those waffles! mm! let's see, as a kid, I was obsessed with spaghetti.. my mom said that's all she ate when she was preggers with me. so that may explain my love for pasta. lately, I've been craving watermelon. too bad its out of season :( better pick up some bubblicious watermelon bubble gum...

OMEffingG your site looks GREATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

I had no idea you were re-doing it, at all! OMG it looks awesome.

It is too weird you re-did yours, I am building a professional website (as of last night!) for myself re yoga. And what a pain it is. Although website building is easier than blogger blog building if you ask me. But ask me in a week when ive torn my hair out.

Did you do this yourself? Help from anyone? What's your template go-to source? Girl, majooooor props, it looks awesome!

- cauliflower

What was wrong with me?!
I couldn't live without them now.
I still LOATHE mayo, soda, and trail mix.

Cute new layout, btw.

I used to hate beets as a child and now I crave them all the time. I also had to "learn" to like mustard, though I still despise the yellow stuff. I'm all about horseradish infused brown. Mmmm.

YUM! I <3 Maple syrup too! I once went to a demonstration on how maple syrup is tapped from the tree/made and it's a pretty extensive process...I think that's why it's so expensive! Crazy!!

Love you girl! Thanks for all the maple inspirations!

Jenny pie I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog makeover!!! It's absolutely gorgeous! How are you doing it??? It definitely looks professional!

That bowl of oats definitely looks yummy! 4g of sugar is far lower than what I've seen out there! Great score girlie!! I'm no instruction follower when it comes to certain things, oatmeal is one of them. hehehe

I, too, LOVE maple syrup. But, samesies, why the FFFFFFF is it soooo expensive? I think we stocked up during a trip to Vermont once--so I always have a ton at home. But whenever I have to buy my own, I cringe.

Lately, I've craving sweets... and chocolate... and things I'm usually NOT into. Not prego either (holler)--but I keep wondering...

Hope you have a wondrous night chicaaaa

Hey, your new blog layout looks great! I almost thought I was on a different blog.

As a kid I would crave Pizza Hut's breadsticks at rather ungodly hours. Hahah. And man, I pretty much "hated" everything I love now way back then. I'm thankful that tastes mature!

I, too, am craving the maple. I heard there was maple powder out there, and I've been looking everywhere! Maybe I'll go on an all-day hunt when I'm visiting my Mamacita (she'll be like "You're looking for what? Why?").

I love the sugar-free maple on my oat bran but it could be more maple-y. Couldn't everything?

Haha, I had a huge maple syrup craving a while back. I had it in oats, on apples, on pancakes--everything! The pumpkin pie cake looks yummy, too. I used to hate brussels sprouts, but I crave em sometimes. Pumpkin, too--I suppose that's not a "normal" thing to crave ;)

Just this summer I started craving really strong flavours! Think marmite, guinness, everything malty and gucky (that is now a word :P) also ham and mustard sandwich I didn't used to like and had a craving one day. Then things like fish I couldn't eat before I was like 14, now I can't go a week without it. It's weird how that happens. By the way, your waffles look EPIC!!! Haven't had them in ages. The dipped apple looks amazing too! Genius :) Thanks for the post, love your blog <3
