We all know the feeling of opening up a magazine or flipping on the TV and asking ourselves "why can't I have her eyes?" or "her stomach is perfect, I wish mine were like that". This pressure to look like the idolized celebrities is overwhelming and often times I feel as though we lose sight that even these beautiful individuals have *gasp* FLAWS.
It seems that no matter how beautiful a woman is, people have to find a flaw. Right now the Internet is buzzing about Megan Fox's thumbs. Really? The girl could not be more drop-dead gorgeous, and people are taking time out of their busy lives to analyze the size and shape of her thumbs? It's no wonder that women, and female celebrities in particular, obsess about certain body parts or facial features. If we don't do it, it's almost guaranteed that someone else will.
Megan Fox doesn't seem all that concerned about her thumbs from what we can tell, but she did say in a recent interview that she is extremely insecure about her looks. She even joked (we hope!) about thinking she's an Alan Alda lookalike. And while we think Alan is adorable, Megan clearly wins out in the attractiveness department.
We also contend that some people's "flaws" are actually what makes them alluring, like Julia Roberts' wide, contagious smile. So we present a list of gorgeous celebrities who have criticized themselves or have been critiqued by others for being less-than-perfect.
Kim Kardashian's Cellulite
We think Kim Kardashian gets a bit of a bad rap. Sure, she had that "for adults' eyes only" Internet tape a few years back, and her reality TV show is a bit too voyeuristic for our tastes, but she's actually a successful business woman, and we think it's unfair that her backside is the "butt" of all her jokes (bad pun intended). As girls who are less than endowed in that area, we think she should continue to stand tall and proud and display her rear without shame. The stunning beauty was publicly annoyed when Complex magazine airbrushed her cover shot to hide some cellulite. Kim fought back by posting the before and after shots on her own website. You go, girl.
Michelle Pfeiffer's Duck Nose
Personally, we think Michelle Pfeiffer is more beautiful today at 51 than she was when she first hit the big screen in the '80s. In 1990 she became the cover girl for People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People issue, and in the interview she said she thought she looked like a duck because of the way her nose tilts up and her mouth curls. Sorry, Michelle, we don't see anything in any way resembling any kind of bird. Thankfully, in more recent interviews, she's finally shed her duck-phobia and laughed at her own off-base critique.
Christina Applegate's Short Legs
Christina Applegate has said that her short legs and long torso drive her crazy and that she wishes she was built more like long-stemmed beauty Cameron Diaz. She says if she searches hard enough, she can find the right jeans to fool the eye. Well, we think Christina has found the magic fashion formula because we never would have thought in a million years that this beauty had leg issues.
Drew Barrymore's Bad Acne
Drew Barrymore claims her #1 beauty problem is acne. We claim she's crazy. But when Drew is asked what her most important beauty item is, she says without hesitation: "zit cream." It must be really good, because we think her skin is flawless. Besides, Drew says she doesn't let any blemish stop her. She thinks happiness makes us pretty, and if someone is content inside, they reflect it outside. We'd like to second that emotion.
Audrey Hepburn's Big Feet
Audrey Hepburn: Classic beauty, fashion icon, stunningly perfect. Right? Apparently, even this drop-dead gorgeous actress was self-conscious about her appearance, in particular her size 10 feet. Funny, we watched her all these years and never even noticed her feet. Except, of course, for those classic flats that she brought into vogue with her pegged pedal pushers. Or maybe her big feet were just overshadowed by her enormous talent.
Kate Hudson's Flat Chest
Unlike Audrey Hepburn, Kate Hudson likes her feet. In fact, she once told People magazine that they are the only part of her body that she's never been self-conscious about. She also said that after she's through with having babies, she might think about a boob job ... but then went on to say probably not. She says she likes being herself. We couldn't agree more, Kate, as we look at you in those stunning belly button-baring red carpet dresses. Remember, the grass is always greener.
Shannen Doherty's Crooked Face
If you look at pictures of Shannen Doherty, there's no denying the critique of her face that runs rampant on the Internet: she is ever so slightly crooked. Studied carefully, there is little symmetry to her face. And though there's no record of her responding to the criticisms, she does pose most often with her head tilted just a little to one side (perhaps to even the scale?). Still we defend the actress' attractiveness. Until it was pointed out to us, we thought of her as just another pretty starlet and contend that isn't it these imperfections that give us character? We should all be so lucky as to have Shannen's "flaws."
Madonna's Tooth Gap
OK, Madonna has a gap between her front teeth. There we said it. We also say, so what? With arms like that, is anyone looking at her teeth? And although the space has seemed to shrink in recent years, we commend her for keeping her signature "flaw" even while trying to perfect everything else about her body. We think it just adds to her charm.
Julia Roberts' Big Mouth
A few years back, when Hugh Grant was on Oprah he joked about his past co-star Julia Roberts' big mouth, saying that when he kissed her there was a slight echo. Of course, he was teasing, but as any picture will show you, her mouth is disproportionately bigger than her other facial features. But is there anyone alive who hasn't been infected by Julia's wide smile and hearty laugh? Her mouth and everything that goes with it is what makes her Julia. And as for Hugh, she forgave him for his cruelty and hopes to act with him again.
Eva Mendes' Overbite
Believe it or not, even the stunning Eva Mendes has a few body hang-ups. As a kid, she used to get teased about her mole ("Hey, Eva, there's some chocolate on your face!") and considered having it removed. She's said that she thinks her hands look like they belong on a little boy. And she also has compared her overbite to a bottle opener and revealed that her family used to call her "Bugs." Still, Eva, who nowadays is known as one of Hollywood's greatest beauties, says she's come to terms with her "flaws."
It warms my heart to see that these celebrities are so open about embracing their flaws and makes me hopeful that more woman, teens, and young girls will follow this trend.
I am a firm believer that not only do flaws make us special and unique - they make us HUMAN. Perfection is impossible.. the main reason being because perfection is in the eye of beholder. We convince ourselves that if we had "her legs" or "her breasts" we would be perfect, when in reality that woman we are admiring is more than likely wishing she had someone else legs or breasts. Ultimately, the pursuit of perfection becomes an ugly cycle of comparison and overwhelming feeling of inadequacy. Would it not be more productive to embrace what we have? accept our flaws, learn to live with them, and focus more so on appreciating the things we love about ourselvses? I'll be honest.. i have my dads nose - slightly crooked with a bump in the middle. I used to HATE it and wonder why I wasn't fortunate enough to get my sisters perfectly slender nose. But you know what? my sister had a very similar feeling when she told me she wished she had my long eyelashes. Point of the story being we both spent so much time desiring what the other had that we lost sight of the fact that we possessed our own beautiful qualities.
I encourage you all to give yourselves a good look in the mirror and notice your flaws. Look at them and remind yourself that they make you who you are! My crooked nose and mole on my chin are beautiful gifts from my parents. Without them, I wouldn't be who I was!
What are some of your flaws?! Have you learned to embrace them or do you still have a difficult time accepting them? What are some features that you love about yourself?!

This is just beyond awesome! I love it and I love coming to your blog and not knowing what's up for the day--but this is a perfect way to start another day on the right foot. You are just fab! Xo take care gem!
Thanks for this doll <3 How BORING would it be if we all looked "perfect"!?!? It's our flaws that give us character!
Great post Jenny! I think we spend a lot of time striving for something that doesn't exist- NOBODY is perfect...just some are better at hiding flaws than others. It would be so boring if we all looked and acted the same- embrace what's unique and love it...if we don't love ourselves, how can anyone else apprecciate us for what we are?! I'd rather be real and be hated for what I am, than fake and loved for something I'm not ;)
beautiful
you are just awesome J baby!
have a great day at the course, make that money honey!!!
xooo
Now that I think about it...we would all look pretty boring if we didn't have our "flaws".
I admit I haven't always loved my body or face, but I am coming to terms with it and I believe its a good thing now that no one else looks like me.
Amazing post love, you are so beautiful inside and out. xoxo
this post just screams awesome! thank u for sharing it with us gorgeous girl xxxx
I absolutely love that article! Thank you for posting it!!
I loove this post!!!
Even the most beautiful, famous, actresses in America have flaws that they are unhappy with! Who woulda thought?
Why cant we all just learn to accept our flaws as something that makes us, us?
Thank you for posting this!
Oh my dear Jenny this is just wanted I needed this morning... that my imperfections make me perfect in myself... thank you for this!
Have a great sunday, beautiful!
oh miss jenny - you always know how to brighten my day. loved this lil' post :) i love the idea of imperfection - we all have them, and it makes us unique! imperfection is perfection, am i right?
glad you had such a lovely 4th my dear - have a most lovely day!
hi beautiful,
wow, AMAZING post :) you never cease to amaze me with your talented writing and wonderful topics! especially this one! it seems like today everyone wants to look perfect but looking perfect isnt possible because everyones view of perfection is different and it often involves idolizing someone elses features rather than appreciating our own unique ones. our uniqueness makes us imperfectly perfect and im really starting to realize that more and more. lifes too short to wasteit wishing we looked like someone else...we need to see the beauty in our own features...like my freckles for instance...i used to HATE them..they always come out in the summer way more cause of the sun but now this summer ive actually started to love them and realize they are actually kinda nice and i now try to think of them as the suns kisses on my skin :)
thanks for such a wonderful posst hun, you reminded me to see the beauty in being unique and having beautiful flaws :)
have a great sunday sweetheart, loves you so much,
xxxx
ps.keep rockin these awesome posts. your a star :)
Thanks for sharing that article! Everyone has "flaws," and that's what makes them human! I used to be upset with parts of my body, and always longed to be "perfect." But flaws give us character! If everyone was "perfect," the world would be pretty boring.
Now I realize this isn't a "flaw," but I used to be ashamed of how muscular I am. I've always been that way--in my baby pictures, there's a pic of 4 year-old Anne running through the sprinkler with her little quad muscle bulging out :D I don't lift weights, but I just have a natural muscle definition. I always get comments, and I used to be sooo embarrassed. I wanted to be like the tiny, waif-like girls. But now I think my muscles are cool! I just embrace them--they're part of me, and I should feel lucky, not abnormal and upset.
I also used to not like my thighs, cause they were "too big." But those same thighs can carry me on 10 mile runs, and I've got to be proud of them--not berate them for their looks :)
Alright, that was crazy long. But I spent so much of my life trying in vain to be perfect, and it was so liberating when I finally realized that I didn't have to do that anymore. Just striving to be the best "me" that I can is more than enough :)
Have a lovely day, darling!
Okay, girlie. This post seriously ROCKS. Probably one of my favorites you've ever posted. LOVE IT! My flaws? Well, I've always had a love-hate relationship with my hair. It's curly and can be hard to manage and often doesn't look as good as say, YOURS! Hehe :) But I've learned to love my hair and feel blessed with it!
<3 jess
xoxo
you are amazing jenny... as simple as that. =D
i love that chinese proverb. this was a great post, jenny! nobody is perfect. and if anyone IS perfect, i think that's actually an imperfection. i think that makes sense...as conflicting as it sounds.
awesome post girl. I have always thought that flaws are what make people the most beautiful. It would be so boring if everyone looked the same. I think the most gorgeous people are the ones that have something unique about them.
Hope you had a great fourth girlie! Love you tons <333
jenny this is an awesome post! i just read that story yesterday too! i do have some flaws and sometimes i can accept them and i feel great about my body but other times i just feel un confedient.
What an awesome post!
My biggest flaw probably isn't physical, but emotional. I'm incredibly angry and irritable and have pretty bad ways of expressing it. I can be very critical and rude, especially with my family. It took me a while to realize that I actually do have anger within me, even though I (thankfully) don't manifest it in a physical way. A physical "flaw" I would say is this beauty mark on my chin. I say beauty mark as a euphemism for what it really is..a mole. I hate the word mole, and the idea that I have one literally on the border of my face and neck has bothered me since I was about three or four (yeah, that young!)
My mom actually just mentioned to me yesterday that I could look into getting it removed..which sounds okay, but I told her that it wasn't necessary. I don't like it by any means, but I've become less bothered by it since I hardly notice it anyway.
Happy Sunday!
Jenny, this was such a beautiful, thought-provoking post. Thank you for expressing all of these wonderful thoughts.
I totally agree with what you wrote...I think it's SO IMPORTANT and SO LIBERATING to embrace our 'flaws'...which truly make us 'us'!
I know I used to fret about so many 'little things' about myself - my hair, my toes, my belly - little flaws that I felt 'everyone noticed'. Even though it's sometimes challenging to this day, I've really learned to embrace so many of these things, and flaunt them ;-) We gotta shake what our mama's gave us!!!
Honestly, why are all these characteristics considered to be "flaws"? What makes size 10 feet a flaw, while size 8 feet are "normal"? Why is a flat chest a "flaw" when that's the way you were born? Someone with a size D chest may consider her chest a flaw as well, but if that's the way you were created, then there's no flaw about it!
By calling things flaws, people are just comparing parts of themselves to parts of other people - no flaws about it!!
I could call my size 11 feet or my small round nose a "flaw", but really? I just call my feet "big" (because that's what they are!). They're a hassle to find shoes for, but they are in no way a flaw. I call my small nose a "Santa nose", but just jokingly describing it. I've never once considered it a flaw. Those things are parts to me that are different than everyone else, but that doesn't make them flaws!
Oh my darling, I cannot tell you how much I love and admire you. This post was absolutely beautiful and I am happy that you shared it with all of us. It is so true that each and every one of us has our many flaws but as you said, those are the things that make us truly BEAUTIFUL and UNIQUE!
Ahh this post was just insightful and amazing and honest and wonderful. It's just a reminder than no one, no matter how much we want to believe them to be, is perfect. Perfection is something be create in our minds and attempt to convince ourselves that it does exist. What exists are the indiviudal characteristics that make us who we are. I know that I have always criticized those little things but I am learning that it is so much more rewarding to enjoy, embrace, and love them!
Thank you for this beautiful post! I am working on loving my flaws. I think I've finally realized I'll never be perfect. And I'm totally ok with that.
